EIP has treated AI governance as one of its core focus areas since the inception of the organization in 2021. Anticipating the current explosion of interest, our landscape analysis published in March 2022 identified several major tech companies and leading AI research labs, such as Alphabet (including its subsidiaries Google and DeepMind), Amazon, Meta, and OpenAI, as among the most important institutions in the world. We are working with partners across civil society to recommend and establish strong industry, regulatory, and international governance norms for this emerging and potentially transformative technology in order to maximize its benefits while minimizing harms.
